The odds were against me: a city girl, a video-game nerd, an owner of extra-wide flat feet, and a champion-like pizza eater.
How did someone like me get into running?
It was my last semester at UC Berkeley and all I had left were two very easy classes. Unfortunately, I didn't have internet or cable at the time. So I was bored out of my freaking mind. Looking back, I really should've just looked for a part-time job. Oh well, woulda, coulda, shoulda!
Then it just kind of happened: I laced up my Airwalks (yeah, really) and went out the door for a run for fun...for the first time in my life. Hey, it wasn't like I never ever exercised before. I was....mildly athletic... I played a bit of team sports growing up, and only ran when I was forced to do it in PE class.
And what did I discover after this inaugural "fun run"?
How approachable it was. It took me less than 5 minutes to change into exercise clothes and lace up my ridiculous skate sneakers, and whoomph! I was out the door. I didn't need to meet up with anybody, bring special equipment, or traverse to some specific place. All I needed was my body, some clothes to cover it up, and a sidewalk.
Also, I was awful at it. Now years later, here I am: still running, and still kind of awful.
